Couple of guys here have the 4.5" lift and from what I see work pretty well. If you go bigger, 6.5 or 8.5, I would start thinking about a SYE with a driveshaft.
I'm sure some XJ guys will chime in pretty soon.

With XJ's, it seems that anything over 3" or so may need SYE. I have 3" on mine and needed to do at least a transfer case drop for sure. I also hear alot that over 4.5" or 5" is really not needed, but what size tires are you ultimatly planning on running?

I want to run 32's or 33's if possible i know ill have to trim. I was thinking of doing a 4.5" for now until i save some more money for a sye. and then i can add my 2" puck and shackles.

I did a 4.5 iro on mine. I love it. It is the perfect height. I purposefully went with 4.5" so when i upgrade to long arms in the future all i can the rest of my lift where it is. I was going for a low center of gravity build. Mine probably sits closer to 5.5 inches. But 31' did not rub at all on it. I now have 32's and i'm looking to try them out at the cliffs this weekend and see how they work. But by looking at where it sits now i don't for see many if any at all rubbing issues. But i won't know for sure until i give them a good stuff or two. I have not trimmed at all at this point.
When i put this combo together my plan was to run 33's with some light trimming and 35's with some more trimming. If you go onto IRO's website you will find they don't have a 4.5 inch lift. Well you need to call them and they can put it together special for you. I paired that off with bilstein 5150 shocks an IRO double sheer adjustable track bar.
My vote is for 4.5" and trim to fit the tire you want. Having the low COG is unbeatable. My cherokee is super stable this way and it really makes off camber situations feel a little bit less hairy.
