To get true cold air on an XJ, you really have to run a snorkel, right? Well, that means you have to cut fenders and relocate the wiper resevoir of course and this is something many do not want to do. What if you took a snorkel top, ran it through the hood and right into the airbox? It would lift with the hood, but fit snug upon closing. If pointed twards the windshield, the risk of rain getting in is diminished. If someone is good at molding plastic, it could be made low profile and not so obtrusive to your field of vision.
What are some of your thoughts?

Any system which draws air into the intake from the exterior of the vehicle would be "cold air". Aside from snorkels, Pontiac had 'Ram Air', Chevrolet had 'Cowl Induction', Ford and Mopar had similar systems (each style). Most of these systems utilized a foam seal around the intake (carburtor system). As for the majority of these aftermarket intake systems sold today for 4x4's and such (which remain under the hood replacing stock airboxes), they are NOT a true cold air system. It's common sense.
As for your idea, it would work however I would suggest using foam between the bottom of the snorkel top (as you referred to it) and whatever you're using for a airbox intake. The purpose here is to seal the connection (under the hood) between the two pieces.

I thought about some type of foam ring or rubber gasket that the bottom of the tube could seal up against a while after I posed. I mentioned the snorkel top only because it's the only thing I know of that exists already. I wish I had the means to mold plastic to get the top correct. The airbox could just have a hole cut into it and afix the said foam or rubber "gasket" to the hole.

Those are pretty cool. I think there would need to be something to protect against water getting into the intake though. I'm thinking like something similar to what you see on top of chimneys, but much lower profile.

I've seen this done in a few different places on the 'net, and I like the idea so far. I may try this sometime.

Those are both interesting ideas. Thanks for sharing. I was originally thinking something like the Hummer style to protect from rain and the occasional car wash. Perhaps a marriage of the different ideas could be figured out.

Read through the threads. People who have tried this method say the filters don't get wet in rain or car washes. One guy even held a garden hose up to the windshield, and it didn't hurt anything. The cowl area drains very well, and the only thing that will get you in trouble is if you submerge the Jeep to the point where the windshield starts go go under the water line.
A couple people linked to a "top hat" cover, like the Hummers use. Lots of pics in those two threads.

So where do you get black pvc or abs in 3"? The big box home inprovement stores just carry white pvc or the corregated drain pipe. I know the white could be painted, but it scratched pretty easily.
