I had my suv checked by a 4x4 shop. They looked underneath and turns out there are no recovery points at the front and no space to install. I was told if I need recovery points, the front bumper needs to be changed which will cost alot of $$$. Bummer. I still have 2 grad classes left. Can't afford that now.
Installing a recovery point at the back would be cheaper and easier, a hitch and a d-ring. Changing my all-season tires to all terrain would not be practical. Those were just bought last year.
So I guess I'm going to have to wait until I don't know when to go offroading…
By the way, I heard that doing a newbie run at the Cliffs is a bad idea. Too narrow and too slippery. I was advised not to bring my suv there…..ever….
I suggest you get opinions (in person) from club member's here at a upcoming Meet & Greet regarding what you could do to your 4x4 . As for being advised not to "ever" take your Xterra to the Cliffs, I have to disagree since I knew people with stock Jeep Liberty's who have gone there and had fun. Just remember, getting stuck is something that happens to everyone at one time or another. Now with that said, if your real concern is possibly damaging your 4x4, then I would suggest you not take it off road.

As Jerry said ask some of the other members at the M&G, and they will tell you the Cliff's is fine. It's a good time, everyone in the club is always williing to lend a hand to someone, so don't worry about getting stuck, I actually enjoy it
You would be surprised what a stock 4x4 can do, we will help you air down and you would be amazed how much that helps.

this is a factory front tow hook for the xterra that should bolt right in on the passenger side frame

or you can do what i do and put a d-ring thru the hole in the frame (not my pic just showing you the portion of the frame that extends down with a hole in it)

That's the exact point on the frame I was talking about having my d-ring shackles as well. I kept the factory tow hook in place and added one d-ring on both frame rails at the hole.

Don't say that! If you start saying those kind of things, it will never happen. I have only been out with the club once (until Saturday that is) and there were a few stock TJs and Cherokees and one JK 4 door. The guys were quick to tailer the run to the abilities of the driver and vehicle. They do a great job of teaching us newbies too. Don't be scared off by the shop owner looking to make money. I would say come out with the group and give it a try. That will tell you what you need to upgrade. The only caveat is that you have to accept the possibility of some damage.

Check out an xterra forum that i am part of: http://www.thenewx.org
There are a lot of helpful threads and people on there. As for recovery points, almost all Xterras come with the factory hook on the front, and I was able to buy an aftermarket shackle mount from someone on the forum. Got the mount welded onto the rear bumper and bam- got my d-ring and I'm good to go. All of that only cost me like $50.
Or you can shell out $800 for a new aftermarket rear bumper if you need recovery points :p
I will be new to the cliffs but even a stock Xterra is capable of a lot more than you think!
