Hello everyone,Smile

My wife and I got a 97' TJ Wrangler SE. It's pretty much stock and not in the best shape, but were working on it slowly.  I saw many pictures on your website. How badly does my car have to be modified so we can go with you guys? How far do you guys go away from Chicago? I' ve been looking everywhere for offroad places, but there is not many. I found a place up in Northern Wisconsin, never been there so I don't know how it is. Thank you,

http://www.mccaslinmountain.com/

They offer off road trails. Never been there, looks nice.

Welcome to the forum! How did you hear about us? Where are you from? We welcome rigs of all shapes and sizes to join DDO, but we do recommend proper recovery equipment, a lift kit and good offroad tires.

We went to McCaslin back in the fall and it was great. Long drive though. We do frequent the badlands and the cliffs, both of which are within 2 hours of Chicago.

My advice would be to get a proper recovery strap(no hooks rated 20,000lbs) make sure you have at least hooks front and rear a hitch works in rear as substitute for hooks if its already there. And of cource a cb . CB about 100 hooks about 10 each and tow strap bout 30.   Then come with to a cliffs run its the closest and makes for a good day run and see what you can do. You will be suprised at what you can do. Then as you gain experience you will know how to spend your money on future modifications.

Welcome to the forum sir. Got any pictures of your rig. You will have a ton of fun not only wheeling it but just by adding new parts to it. You will learn a lot about not only the vehicle but your driving skills offroad.  Hope to see you at the 2010 season kick off in March and hope to see you on the trails with us this year.

We are from Norridge, We searched Jeep clubs on Google and a list a clubs poped up in Illinois. I need some advice please.

I bought the car with after market rims. They currently have 30x9.50R15 tires. I want to change the tires. Some guy at Just tires said I could fit 31x10.59R15 on the rim. Does any one know of any problems of that size of a tire on that rim? Also I don't want to spend a lot of money on the tires. I found General Grabber AT2. There not that expensive, and they look nice. I'm also looking for a set of cheap used full doors. I also want a hardtop, used, as long as it is sealed. I want to spend up to $400 max on a hardtop. If anyone knows any good deals on tires, full doors, or a hardtop please feel free to e-mail me. We will upload some pictures shortly.Laugh

I have 31's on my 00'tj and they do not rub (bfg at's)…not sure of the lift difference in the two models..but I'm guessing you should be ok..you could always throw a hockey puck body lift to be sure if you're looking to save cash. Just my thoughts…I'm as new to this as you…

I would just go and buy yourself a simple lift, whether its a body lift or a 3 inch suspension lift, over time you might want to go bigger but its a good start. As for fitting 31s under a Wrangler with no lift, I'm not much of a Wrangler guy, more of a Cherokee and Grand Cherokee guy but I have seen guys fit 31s under their Wranglers with little or no lift, totally up to you though. If you are worried about rubbing, like I said, I would do a body lift or mild suspension lift.

I dont want to be "that" guy, but DONT use hockey pucks to do a body lift please!  Build it right, dont waste your time.

Welcome to the forum!  31X10.50X15 will fit under a wrangler.  I suggest you get something more agressive if you plan on going into the mud.  The All Terrains are great, but ask the couple people in the club who have them, they dont like them offroad at all.  They turn into racing slicks because they cant clean themselves well enough when it gets sloppy.  Last badlands trip, we saw a perfect example of this thanks to josh.  Chris and I have the same tires and went through all the same stuff.  Im not 100% sure what went wrong when josh slid off that trail and scared the everliving crap out of Amy, Im guessing it was his tires.  I didnt have a problem after we got him unstuck.

And as far as future upgrades, the jeep will absolutely tell you what you have to change next.  They are very good at this.

Welcome to the Forum!  I'm really glad you found us!  Sounds like you are trying to fix/modify your jeep.  There are a few things you are going to want and get before hitting the trails.  Front and rear recovery is a must.  You can purchase a 20,000 LB tow strap at your local Wal-Mart, Home Depot, or Farm & Fleet if you don't already have one.  NO METAL HOOKS ALLOWED!  They really really hurt bad when you get hit by one!!

A lift is not a must, but if you can get a deal on one I'd say go for it.  Thanks for offering your old lift Andy!!

As for the tires Ronhob brings up a good point.  If you plan on wheeling your Jeep you are going want and stay away from A/Ts.  Not saying that they are all bad, but my experience with them aren't so great.  My old Firestone A/T's got me stuck all the time.  The mud turns them into racing slicks just like ronhob described.

If you are pressed for cash right now but need tires, try Craigslist for a set of used ones.  I'm sure you can find some aggressive MTs already on a set of rims.  If you don't like this route, try re-treads.  I know someone is going to chim in and say they are crap and dangerous, but I have been running my MT retreads for about 5 months / 4,000 miles and have no complaints.  Just watch out where you buy them from.

This is where I got mine:   http://www.treadwright.com/

I got a set of 5  31" tires (265/70/16) for $430 shipped to my door.  That was with a $20 off coupon, i think I still have if you want it.

I plan on buying real tires when these go bald, but am satisfied with the retreads for now.

Good Luck with the Jeep. Post up if you have any questions or problems.  Hope to see you at the Kick Off event in March!!

Hello,

Thanks for the tire link. I'm going to order tires from treadwright.com. If you do have that cupon code I would apprichiate it a lot. Do you know by any chance the quality of these tires? Are they safe for highway driving?

THanks

Sure thing.  Give me some time to dig up the coupon code that I used.  I'll PM it to you as soon as I have it.

As for the quality and safety issue, these were my concerns.  I called TreadWright and spoke with one of the owners.  Not sure the name of the guy I spoke to but he reassured me that they are safe and reliable.  He said he uses them on his Chevy Tahoe which his wife uses to drive their children around in.  They are on their second set of tires and have never had a blowout or treads come off.  Now the guy could have just been saying this, but I though it was unlikely that he would use his own family as an example, so I trust him.

I have put about 4,000 miles on mine (half of those highway) and have not expreienced any of the treads coming off.  I'm going to be rotating them this weekend (I know I'm passed the 3K mark) so I will be insepecting them throughly for any defects.  I will be sure to post up if I do see anything that alarms me about the tires.  (Especially since I'm recommending them).

Just so you know, I got the P Rated tires.  The side walls are used tires, BF Goodrich Long Trail is the type I have.  I beileve these tires are standard.  Treadwright also used GoodYear MTRs for Retreads.  You will have to call them and ask them to specify which tire is used for the type of Re-tread you are plannig on buyiing.

What type (A/T or M/T) are you going with?  Also what size did you decide on?

-John

Yeah exact same ones (Except in 16" rims). Good Choice! Those tires should do well on the trail. :-)
