Not sure if this works with the TJ side of Jeep but with my 98 XJ (4.0L), I had a upper O2 sensor go bad and it would run very rich. It would also clog the cat up. Funny story, we were at the Badlands last year, I believe it was for the Halloween Run and with the bad o2 sensor and the clogging cat the XJ would dump out black smoke, kind of like a diesel. It was pretty fun. I would recommend replacing both of them at the same time.

To add to this, I'd get myslef an 02 sensor socket. It has a cut out for the wire. It will help prevent you from having to go buy another sensor due to screwing up the wire. Don't ask how I know. =/
