In the big picture of my build, I need to figure if I will be needing a rear bumper carrier or roof rack. I'm planning on 31x10.5's and wondering if they will fit inside (XJ) on the stock mount? Can anyone show me pics of thier larger-than-stock spare solution?

I do not own an xj so take this for whats it worth.  I would think that a 31" tire would fit in the back seat and probibly in the stock mount, maybe you would have to move that bolt in the middle up a bit with a bracket or something.  What about laying the tire down in the back and wratchet strapping it down?  My buddy has a zj on 37s and he can fit a tire laying down in the back of that thing.  I would not mount a tire on the roof, it rasies your c.g and it cant be fun lifting a tire over your head and up on top of the roof.  I would get a rear tire carrier if you dont want it in the back.

I think Tim did this and he made a little tech tip about it on his car domain….  HE DID!!!  Check it out:  http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2488225/5  Should be what you need.

Thanks for the insight guys. I want to keep the back as open as possible for other stuff, so it looks like what Tim did will work when I do upgrade. I just saw the JCR rear bumper with carrier and it seems to be less expensive as others I have looked at, so it might be an option further down the line.

Thanks again

I feel your pain. Im gonna be trying to stuff a 32" in there soon… But I have been carrying one of my stockers for an emergency because in never more than 30mi from home, and a stocker is enough to limp home on.

but the only way your gonna figure it out is to try to stuff it in there. And dont forget that you dont have to have that metal bracket there. its only 4 bolts to remove it (just make sure you put the bolts back or your gonna have a watery surprise when it rains)

I used to have a 31x10.5x15 on a jeep ravine wheel. I needed to extend the factory spare tire hold for it to lock in nicely. It barely fit but the hatch closed and the rear seat latched. I now have 32x11.5x15's and even with my extension there is no chance of it fitting in the stock location with the seat latch. If your willing to keep the rear seat unlatched on the left side you can fit a 32 no problem. I was not willing to do that building a
Rear bumper with tire carrier became my next option.

What I have been doing is just laying it flat in the back but James at Ares Fabrication is making a tire carrier for the bumper he made for me. It will be nice to have the space in the back again.

James called the other day to verify a couple of measurements so I hope it will be done soon. I'll post a pic when I get it.

I stopped by the Ares Fab shop today and saw the parts that will make up my carrier. James is upgrading the latch to a heavy duty locking one, adjustable mount plate to fit different tire widths, and a large hoop to mount two jerry cans for the zombie apocalypse that I'm prepping for.:) I'm not sure what to do about the license plate light though.

I don't have an XJ either, but from the pictures I've seen, it looks like a lot of guys who choose to store their spare tire on the roof rack do so when they're wheeling. I'm assuming that's because it helps alleviate clearance issues on the back while the Jeep deals with extreme angles.

I'm sure there's probably a point when it becomes top-heavy and may cause more problems up there, but I'm not sure. Just started looking at roof racks myself.

With the right bumper you won't have clearance issues.

With my 31's and 3" lift, I won't be trying to tackle anything too steep anyway.

Gotcha. Just making note of the pics and videos I've seen. :)

I hear ya. I'm going through the "should have gone bigger from the start" syndrome. I can't afford to change things right now, so I have to just enjoy what I have and wheel within it's limits.
