Anyone have experience dealing with cast aluminum wheels leaking air?  My MOAB's are leaking again and it's got me PO'd.  Discount Tires (Naperville location) cleaned two of them for me earlier this summer and they're leaking again.  I'm thinking of tossing them like frisbees deep into the quarry and buying steel wheels.

I had considered painting them (matte black) for appearance reasons but I'm not sure that would help the cause I am dealing with now?

me and my family have dealt with that a lot.  a lot of time it takes a couple of cleanings and reseating until you get a good bead seal, my moms lumina, my dads dakota and my grand cherokee have and still do it from time to time.  if you like the wheels and want to keep them i would take them back to discount and jerk about them, they will most likely re-clean and re-seat the beads for free if you complain about it enough.  thats what we did anyway.

but if you dont want to mess with them anymore you can toss them into the deep quary of my garage lol

no you dont get it… its a jeep, its never fixed, just less broken

I can't complain to Discount Tires since they didn't charge me for cleaning, remounting and balancing the wheel / tire.  I have a "long history" as a customer and have never been charged for fixing flats, rotations, etc.

I went thru the same thing (leaking air) with the stock cast aluminum wheels on a Limited Liberty and I don't want to go thru that again.  I have this gut feeling even I have them cleaned again, one sub-zero day this coming winter I am going to find a flat tire or two.

Ah, what to do?…..

I have the same problem from time to time on my F-150.  I guess its just the nature of the beast.

Guess I'm lucky I have ran aluminum rims on the last two Wranglers and two Dodges before them and have never had a problem with leaks.  I've heard rumors of when you air down rocks and dirt will find it's way into your bead and start to cause this problem.  Don't know if that is true or not but I rarely air down and have never had a problem.

I, too, don't have issues with the aluminum rims on my KJ.  Never have had any problems.  But, to play devil's advocate, I do air down most of the time when I go wheeling… so I don't know what the issue with yours could be, Jerry.

Earlier this year (not long after a Cliff's run) Discount Tire told me there was nasty dried mud and clay causing the air leak.  I do air down.  I was led to believe they (Discount Tire) cleaned the wheels best they could.  So I'm guessing maybe corrosion?

Jerry, do they clean the beads on the tires also? I know I see aluminum wheels come in to work all the time with rim leaks, especally Chrysler wheels. They tend to corrode alot more often than any other aluminum wheel I've seen. Usually, we clean up the wheel, and the beads also to prevent them from leaking…but in all honesty, all aluminum wheels will eventually have the same problem. Its just a matter of cleaning it the best that you can to prevent the leaks from occuring too often. Oh, and yeah airing down, and taking them offroad and airing back up tends to worsen rim leaks, especally when driving thru mud and water. Dirt and debris will always get in between the wheel and the bead…even the smallest of particles.

My soft 8's were $40 each new and never leaked air.

Moabs definitely have the bling factor though.
