whats the difference with the yellow top and such? I know they are safer in a rollover but seriously they are pricey.

PS see how that works. Someone made a post in the what u did to your jeep section. I had a question or comment andd started another thread since its off topic.

Yellow top Optima batteries are basically for vehicles that are running a winch or a lot of audio stuff. They are a bit price, $190.00 at Farm and Fleet but they are also spill proof, they have a quicker charge, etc. I have used them in every Jeep I have owned, I like them a lot, the price sort of sucks but its well worth it, if you are running a winch, extra lights, etc. I am going to get into contact with Optima and see if they do a club discount program and maybe send us some stickers cuz everyone knows, I like stickers.

blue is the marine

yellow is extended use

red is you every day starter

like Evens said, yellow is the most desiable for winching, and all around offroading because its a extreme deep cycle cell.

and a club discount would be amazing!! I really want to switch from my small red to a yellow!

So if I understand this correctly a yellow top will let you temporarily(winching and other short term elestrical pulls)get away with a lower amp alternator. Do you see where I am going with my question. Sure a specialty high amp alt is best but stock or stock replacement is what most use. Will the yellow top be more forgiving and let ya get away with a regular alt.

yellow top is considered to be a leisure battery to power auxiliary equipment like Evans said sound systems etc it discharges its currant slowly over a longer period of time.

red tops are "starter" battery and can discharge high amounts of currant but over a short period of time that’s why many off roaders in Europe use a twin set up using a yellow and red top on a split charge system and separate the system in to two circuits (red for starting only) so that no matter how much winching you do or lighting you run you can still start the truck

To do a cheap upgrade, I believe you can use the V8 ZJ alternator for a litle extra juice.

this is true that the zj alt has more output than  atleast the the xj. not sure about other models. I belive its a step from 114amp to 136amp. once the weather breaks from cold, im gonna do some JY digging for good stuff, and that is on my list
