That's horrible. I just hope the rumored account that people were throwing rocks at the driver isn't true. That would make this story even more sad.
There's been a news update today. FAST-aid is now involved. Pirate News Update.

I heard the rumor about the rocks being thrown too. I sure hope it isn't true. I love watching these races but I always thought it to be crazy to stand so close to the track. It is horrible though and I'm glad it wasn't much worse.

A guy that took one of the videos was complaining that there was no security and that he was never told to stay far from the track. Seriously? If you are not intelligent enough to know that on a track of that length where trucks are going FAST over uneven terrain that you should probably stay back, the world is in trouble.
I feel badly for the driver but it is nice to know that he will not be facing any criminal charges for what happened because I strongly feel that it was not his fault and it is clear that it wasn't intentional. Obviously, living with this is going to be the real challenge for him.

Just more proof there are some really ignorant dumbasses in this world. A guy I know was telling me he works with a guy who had run this race a few times in the past and people have been hanging out dangerously close to the track course for years. Matter of fact, he said the track course actually changes with each lap. In other words, the track course you ran past a certain point during the previous lap will not be the same next time around.
I heard on the radio the other day the California Highway Patrol determined after it's investigation there would be no charges filed against the driver. Nothing illegal was evedent due to the fact this was a sanctioned event. They included it was just a horrible accident and hopefully people (spectators) should learn something from this.
