Trail requirements

You may want to think about making a full size spare a requirement; how is somebody going to get home with a stock spare if they run 35s?

Also I don't understand your rules, are you saying I can not have my windshield down on a trail run?

I've had 38's and needed a standard 30" size spare to get home.  If you don't have a locker I don't see a problem with it.  Now if you are on a major trail that requires bogger or other serious tires I can see a slight issue, but if all terrains are fine what is the issue?

If you run a tire combo that far out on the road you are going to make your spider gears go all 'splody up in your diff.

Getting off the trail and to a trailer is one thing but most of the guys here, I think, drive to the tral which means a tire mismatch like that is going to strand somebody at the park.

Most of us, if not, all of us in the club have a full size spare. I honestly cant think of anyone who does not have a full size. That's always a given though. You're right, should be included with the requirements, but I think that will be address to those, especially the newer members, before they venture out onto the trails with everyone else in DDO.

The bit with the headlights…There are quite a few rigs I wheel with that don't even have headlights. There are no state laws about having them on when driving off road. There aren't any laws about driving off road. Other than not to of course.

Other than and the windshield thing I thought it was a good and thorough list.

Great points you guys. I changed it to say "Full-size spare tire" and the headlight thing, well that was a typo, it should have said "While in a convoy TO a trail run" not ON. This meaning, while traveling down the highway or a road in a convoy, much the they T4T how headlights and flashers were being used.

On a Sunday?

Do you really wanna tow a ZJ on a trailer behind a ZJ with no brake controller?

Not for me, thank you kindly.

The to/on edit makes it all make much more sense now.

Actually I am NOT one of those guys who thinks that you need a huge truck to tow something but I AM a proponent of working inside of the limits of your rig…

FYI, the max braked tow capacity on a ZJ is 5K with a GVWR of around 5K and a curb weight of just under 4K you can be a thousand pounds over factory curb weight and tow a braked 5k load of combined trailer and load which with most Jeeps on most trailers would put you over weight legally and, in my opinion, barley in control of a dicey load.  I towed with an XJ once when I was younger and didn't pay attention to things like this and that experience is the reason why I now pay attention to things like that.

To legally and safely pull a Jeep on a trailer you really should have a pick up truck, preferably a full size but some of the minis have the capacity to do it.

Remember being able to pull it is a minor part of towing, being able to stop and control it is another.  If you have a 5K, or more, load on a vehicle that is only slightly over 5K and it starts to sway and whip around the load is going to be able to push the tow rig around instead of the tow rig stabilizing the load; not a good situation.

As for surge vs. electric brakes I go electric every time unless I'm towing a boat and have to put the trailer in the water.  Properly set electrics should never lock up and if you get a sway int he trailer you can use the trailer brakes to straighten out where with surge brakes you are helpless because you can not use the trailer to slow down the tow vehicle!  It's a personal preference thing, I know a few guys who swear by surge brakes but I hate 'em.

As for what they do in the UK… I work on European equipment for a living and based on what I have seen and heard on my trips ot the factory I put no stock in anything they do in the UK being better…Laugh

EDIT: There was a reason to type all this before the post above me got editied…

I'm not trying to be a jerk but can you show me where you got that info, everything I can find lists all the ZJ tow specs at 2K, or 5K with the tow pacakge even for the 5.9.

Not saying your wrong, just saying I can't find the info.

Yeah, I know nothing about towing except that it you tow a car throught a toll booth it will cost you more in toll fare than just driving 2 cars through. Does that may ANY sense at all? WTF?!

They do it based on axles. So having a car on a one axle trailer adds three axles, not two, etc. :)
