Hello,Â
Â
Â
I got a 97 TJ. When I bought it the previous owner
told me that he changed the radiator. I'm not sure if its after market
or an original jeep. Anyway, two things that I've noticed that bother
me.Â
Â
Â
1) In winter when its about 32 outside or cooler, the
temperature gauge in the car will only go to about a little less than a
quarter. Now around spring time, it sometimes goes iver the quarter mark and i've
seen it go almost to the center of the guage. My question: Is it normal for a 97 TJ
temperature guage
to go to about a quarter in winter or is there something wrong with my
cooling system?Â
Â
2) I looked at the radiator from under the car
and i noticed something interesting. Right by the lower radiator hose,
there is a empty hole, which to me looks like a place for a temperature
sensor, but there is no sensor. Is there suppose to be a temperature
sensor there? I have also considered a bad thermostat, but the car never
overheat, except once when i put a big piece of cardboard over the
radiator to see if the temperature would go up. The temperature did go
up and then I took it out to prevent the engine from over heating. The
gauge went all the way to the end into the red zone, and i   took out
the cardboard. So I have eliminated the option that the gauge does not
work properly.Â
Â
Â
P.S. My car is pretty much stock, I only have
a little bigger tires, but I wanted to go with you guys to Badlands on
May 15. Do you guys think I would be able to go off roading with a stock TJ or would I keep getting
stuck non stop?Â
Â
Â
Thanks in advance |

Sounds to me like youhave a bd or missing t-stat.
Give temps rather than gauge positions and it will be easier to diagnose for sure.
Your Jeep, if the t-stat is working, should run at between 195-210 degrees plus or minus about five degrees. You are not in 'overheating' or engine damage range until you start to crest 225 or more and sustain it but down by 210 is really ideal. If you are not acheiving 195 or better chances are your t-stat is not closing and your Jeep is never warming up all the way.
The open hole is just not used in your aplication.

You'll be fine on trails. Make sure you get your temp issue situated. Temp readings would be better like said above

I'm with Doug on the bad or missing Thermostat.   If you replace it make sure you don't over tighten the housing – they are prone to crack.

yea i will agree a tstat does seem like the issue. ive seen those particular ones come apart and then it acts as there isnt one at all. have you noticed that your mil light (check engine light) is on . as being a 97 the pcm should realize the engine is not reaching operating temp of 195-210. this will change your fuel mileage and make the engine run real rich. which will lead to premature sensor failiure. i would change the tstat asap and if that doesnt work the engine coolant temp sensor may have gone bad. but try the tsat and go from there.
