so I started buying smittybuilt bumpers and sliders a month or two after buying my Jeep…. I read reviews and most people said there powder coating is much better than it used to be….. Thats bullSh*T! I've sold my front stinger cause of fear of rusting ( it was only four months old) I'm selling my rear bumper W/hitch & d-rings cause its starting to rust(only two months old) and my rock sliders are almost completely rust color'd (four months old). since I had to glue and bolt them to the Jeep(smittybuilt instructions) I will be now drawing up plans to boat side my Jeep. I hate the look of rust on such a clean 4X4. But mainly just wanted to tell all you that smittybuilt SUCKS!! and if anyone has experience with building a custom rear bumper and/or boat side on there Jeep please let me know… I'm try'n to gain as much info b4 I start cutting.

Thanks,

Dan

You could have grinded it down and repainted it with something else.

Yeah I have to agree with Matt (Evans) especially since I've never understood why anyone would apply powdercoat to steel (or aluminum) pieces that are bound to be abused offroad.  Paint (easy / quick touch-up) or bedlining makes the most sense to me.

I dont know. I have seen some pretty good powdercoating and even that gets jacked up. For example, I have a new Rusty's Offroad gas tank skid on the Grand Cherokee and I'm pretty sure I am going to be using it this year, will I care about the abuse it takes, nope, will I care about the rust that probably starts, nope, why? Rattle can.

no offense but rustys isn't much better quality than smittybuilt….. I've had issues with there parts and my buddy who wheel'd az broke a few of there coils when they weren't that old. and his leafs sagged… but that happen'd a few yrs ago on his XJ. His first lift was a 6" rustys lift which he was not happy with. But my powder coating job on my fuel tank skid and steering box skid has been dropped on (& and plow'd into) plenty of  rocks at the cliffs and no rusting or powder coating flake'n off or scratched off

My gf got a set of rocker guards for her JK just over a year ago and they've held up great. They've been offroad a couple times, but even with the winters up here, there have been zero rust issues, even after grinding down part of the slider where it bolts up to the frame, and then rattle-canning that area, it has not even rusted over. I dont know, personally I think any brand even if its powdercoated, whether its Smittybilt to Warn to Rusty's will all rust without proper maintenance, just part of owning a steel product with powdercoating, and the amount of abuse it gets. Just my 2cents. Cool

I havent had any problems with all the Rusty's stuff that I have owned. I had the stinger bumper from them on my XJ and never had huge rust problems. Their quality has changed a lot as I saw with Fabio's lift we did at Austin's house. I will admit, the first XJ I had 11 yrs ago had Rusty's stuff on it and yes, they did rust a lot but I think Skyjacker is probably the worst for rust. Just my 2 cents with the whole Rusty's stuff.

I never owned my XJ long enough for my rustys lift to rust. but I feel like it just depends what day it was made… (who cleaned the matel and prep'd it)
