As for GM engines, would you be referring to late model?  I once had a L88 427 Alum heads and never had a problem.  On the other hand, I also once had a Donovan 417 Alum racing engine and know what your talking about regarding thread fittings and such.
FWIW, I do recall the horror stories of the Northstar engine.

Any GM motor with some sort of aluminum. Heads, intakes, blocks, oil pans, you name it. Pretty much all manufacturers are using aluminum more and more in order to save weight. Subframes, control arms, steering knuckles, makes my job harder with every new vehicle.

i made my front and rear bumpers on my xj for less then 180 bucks 3/8 steel plate was used they took beating of a life time now i need to find the pics of them
