If all goes right the XJ will be relieved from its DD(daily driver) duties. When I got to work this morning I saw a '97 4runner sitting in our whole sale lot. I checked it out and this thing is straight for a '97. Only body concern is the roof paint is starting to peel. It is 4wd auto with the 3.4L V6. The big problem is when I started it A LOT of smoke came out of the tail pipe. After a few minutes the thick smoke went away. I'm suspecting a small valve stem seal leak. Has not smoked since then. Anyway this thing drives great. The motor is quiet and cant even feel it shift. Has new tires and new pads. When I got it up in the air I was suprised to see no leaks and NO RUST. THe only thing is that she has 213K on the clock. But for $1,500 can I pass it up?

Slander— What should I expect with a 213K Yota? I'm more concerened about the motor.

You better put a snorkel on this Yota if you get it. And the XJ better come out and play in the mud once in a while.

While driving the Toyota, if you decelerate when going down a hill using the transmission to slow you down watch for any more smoke. If you have a bad valve stem seal a high vacuum situation such as what I described above will exacerbate the problem and you will see more smoke. When you started it up and saw the smoke what color was the smoke?

Evans— The XJ will be 90% offroad 10% dd. I want the XJ to last for a long time so it'll be parked until an event. My wife works in Hoffman Estates so she can use the Yota in the winter if we have crazy snow. I was a little worried when she was truckin in the snow with her Odyssey.

GGG—- The only time I see smoke is when started after a few hours. It does idle high (1500RPMs) for the first minute. While driving theres nothing. It had not smoked bad since the first time. The car runs smooth as heck. No stumbling or any misfires and no blowby. Tonight I'm going to pull a spark plug and see whats on the tip. Its hard to tell the exhaust color. I see a blueish tint that would mean oil. No sweet smell from the exhaust.  It is a DOG off the line though. Then again I'm used to my XJ. I ran a Car Fax and it spent most of its like in WA state and Arizona. Its only been in IL for 2 years. If it gets bad i can always pull the heads and replace the seals and head gasket. Any other thoughts? Thanks

first off join http://www.ttora.com, they have all the FSMS uploaded on there for ya and i have learned a ton about yotas on there origionally being a jeep guy.  A yota with 213k on it is just getting broken in lol!!! seriously!!  Check the water pump and timing belt, the timing belt needs to be changed out at 90k, and the water pumps are notorious for crapping out around then, change the water pump when ya do the belt, its right there.  check the valve adjustment (never done it, suposed to be easy i guess its in the FSM) it needs to be done evrey 90k and may be the source of the probs.  The water pump timing belt, and spark plugs is the extent of my engine experience with the 3.4.  The one thing you will notice is that the has zero low end balls, its a high reving motor unlike a jeep 4.0.

Let me know if or when you are going to do a timing belt on the truck, ill help you out!  Ive got a parts hookup as well at a dealer.

Just a heads up i bought my yota as a DD with no intention of wheeling it.  Needless to say my trail rig jeep has long since been sold off and my tacoma now looks like a raisin!!

Thanks for the input fellas! Sorry i havent responded. BUT I did do an oil change today and luckily the oil flowed down in a "V". the outer edge was nice and black and the center was chocolate milk shake.

GGG– did not do the comp test yet. One of the guys at worked borrowed it and left it at home. Tomorrow I'll run the test.

Slander— Once I finish up house projects I'm going to tear into it. Worse case I'm going to oull the heads and send it to the machine shop to get checked out. If its going to cost me more than 300 a head at the machinist I'm going to buy the "done ones" on Ebay for 290 shipped.

That sucks, are you sure its a 3.4 and not the 3.0?  The 3.0s are notorious for blowing head gaskets and supposidly toyota will still fix them under warrenty.  I did some searching and it sounds like a head gasket, should not be too bad of a job if its just the gasket and nothing else is fugged up.  IF its a 3.0 i would try to find a 3.4 and just swap that in, more power and supposidly will pretty much bolt right in.  http://www.yotatech.com is the ultimate source for that swap.

Yup its the 3.4… Pretty much confirmed that I'm getting coolant seeping in. The Snap On guy came by today to drop off some "block checker fluid." Sure enough the liquid detected carbon vapos in the coolant. Love that tool! Wife has been bugging me about getting wood floors so after thats all done I'm going to pull the heads and send them out to the machine shop to get magnafluxed. Depending on the cash flow I may rebuild both heads.

I registered at T4R forum. Man I hate these forums cuz its giving me unpure thoughts! I MAY give her a 1.5" bump .

that sucks about the head!  Firast it will be a budget boost, then some sliders, then a lockright, next thing you know it you will have it laid on its side in a rock garden in harlan telling yourself that you really didnt need the drivers side rear door and glass anyway!!

LOL my wife would hang me!!

Do you have any tools to hold the balancer while I break the crank bolt loose? How about the tool that holds the cam sprocket? I'm going to start my tear down tomorrow night.

When i did the timing belt, I wratchet strapped a breaker bar to the frame rail and just bumped the starter to break the crank bolt loose.  I know this sounds nuts, but it works and seems to be the way to get it done without making custom tools.  I dont remember doing anything special with the cam sprocket.  You need a tourque wrench that goes to over 250ft pounds to get the crank bolt back on.  If you need one ill let you borrow mine.  I dont know how much room you have in the 4runner, but it saved me alot of headaches yanking out the radiator and give yourself some more room to work.

I started the tear down lastnight. Gotta love all those vacuum hoses. Tonight I'm going to pull the PS pump and AC Comp.. Hoping to get the timing belt off tonight.

I'll be getting a top end gasket kit for 350 from Oak Brook Yota. Let me know if you know of any cheaper option. Our sister store (McGrath Lexus) uses Werner Machine for thier head work. Called the owner today and quoted me 380 for both heads. Thats doing everything. Tear down, decking, pressure testing, R&R seals, valve job, valve adjustment etc….. 380 sound fair?

Did you do the bump the starter trick to get the crank bolt loose?  If so kinda crazy isnt it?!?!  I dont know about head prices.  Ill pm you my parts hhokup that i have a yota dealer, i have to ask him if its cool first before i stat having people call him.  Im sure he can beat that price, he works at a dealer downstate and even with shipping hes way cheaper than the dealers up here for parts.  Unlike heeps, you want to stick with yotam dealer parts since they seem to last the longest.

Didnt do the bump. I placed a grade 8 bolt in one of the holes and placed a pry bar in between the socket and the G8 bolt. Man I almost put my fist through the fender. I braced myself and put all my stregnth into it. Well the last person that did the t-belt/water pump did not tighten it to spec….

Thanks anyway. I forgot an old coworker works for a Toyota delership near us. $280 his cost. I'll call you later about that tool. I pulled the Tbelt the way all data stated. TDC then remove the tensioner bolts slowly. I'll call you in a bit about that tool. I have to fab up a tool to hold the cam sprocket. You have one?
