I'm actually asking this for a friend….. I was discussing my eagerness to sign up with DDO this coming weekend and he also became very interested in the DDO group. I shot him a link to this site for him to take a look. His question was on the Full Size Spare requirement to join the club. What defines a full size spare? Is it the same size tire that is on the vehicles drive axles considered "full size"? For instance if you have 36" swampers, you would need to have a 36" spare tire as well OR could it just be a rim/tire combo that would be capable of getting your rig off the trail and into a safe place even though it might only be a 32"?
For the record he does NOT have lockers or a limited slip, that would go without saying that a comperable size tire would be necessary.
Again, I know it's an odd question but worth asking IMHO.
Thanks!

My understanding of the req. is a full size tire that matches the other 4 in diameter, i.e. no 50mph donut tires.
In your example running say a 36 and a 32 on the same axle would be enough to get you off the trail with an open diff. Driving on the road would be dangerous.
Your friend would probably be ok but then how are they going to get home if they shread a tire?
You can find all sorts of cheap tires on Craigslist.

Doug is correct. Its doesnt have to be the exact size but a spare big enough to get you off of the trail and either to the parking lot or to the campground. As long as your friend has something along those lines would be just fine.

I always thought a "full size spare" at least in the wheeling world, was defined as a tire within 2"s of what you normally run. Example, my buddy has 37s on his zj, and rocks a 35" spare, hes even locked f/r.

So I'm gonna take it (and pass it along) that as long as he has a spare that is CLOSE to what he has (or a trailer LOL) and is not one of the ridiculous space saver donut things, that he will be all good. I figured that this was the case but just wanted to clarify.
Thanks for the responses, All!!!

xjay98- no he lives in new lenox, and its not on the street too much.
Moparboy- Ill try to get him to come out on a run if the zjs working hes a pretty busy guy so i dont think he would have time for a club, it currently has a twisted unibody from moab, and it doesnt get driven too much.

I think that the Cliffs management just wants you to have something to get you off the property. Once your past the gate they don't care what your rolling on. The only thing is if you are running any kind of a locker or OEM Positrack you are going to want the same size spare as the tires you run or you will ruin your diff before you get it home.

LOL ill let him know, im prettty sure 90% of the stuff will be kept for a buggy. Saying that, hes emotionally attached to that zj and will probibly be buried in it. He needs to put it on a frame puller, straighten out the unibody, and get an exo/ino cage on it and he will be all good!!
To stay on topic, odd size spares+ lockers for an extended period=boom!!
