So last saturday, I was pulled over by on of Genoa's finest. He walked up to my door and said,
"The reason I am pulling you over is because you dont have mud flaps on your vehicle"
Yes, MUD FLAPS, according to him, there is a law in Illinois that states that if your vehicle has half of the tire sticking out of the wheel wells you need mud flaps. I told him I didnt know that they was such a law, he then got angry and asked me if I thought he was lying to me, yes he got bucky badass on me, I then shut him up by saying that I worked for the fire department in Genoa, he went back to his vehicle with my driver's license, insurance, and my fire department ID, 5 minutes later, and let me state this, I was laughing that whole 5 minutes I was waiting for him to come back and say…
"Well Mr. Evans, I cant find the law, so I'm not going to waste anymore of your time but I know its a law."
So after that whole little episode, which I later found out he was new to the Genoa PD, so thats why I didnt know him, I went on Jeepforum.com, who have our states law on a link…
(625 ILCS 5/Ch. 12 Art. IV heading)
ARTICLE IV. TIRES
This is the chapter that talks about tires, I found nothing about my tires/mud flap thing, basically what I am saying is that its a bullshit thing that he pulled me over for. Its smart to maybe have fender flares but most Jeeps dont sit as high as say a lifted Dodge Ram. I asked a buddy of mine on the fire department who is also a truck driver and he says the law that states you need mud flaps is for semi truck drivers. Just figured I would share that little episode with everyone. I will actually have all the laws printed out soon and available for DDO members.

I was there when you were telling John about this. Hillarious. He goes, "Oh man, Matt got pulled over!" and my first thought was for the bumper, but it was still hillarious. Bogus, but hillarious.

I would get pulled over almost weekly before I put my flares back on. You dont need mud flaps if you have your tires covered. Your bumpers lowest point can only be 23 inches from the ground. As far a a bumper, they only trouble I ran into is when I didnt have one. I never got a ticket for my tires sticking out, they always found something else. I was warned many many times about getting the flares. As far a the mudflap law goes, its only semi. You might get harassed, but nothing should happen as far as tickets. Must have been a slow night in genoa.

Bumper height is 22" not 23" for Jeep passenger vehicles. The height goes up as the weight class goes up, but Jeeps aren't going to weigh in at that much.
Bumper width states that per IL law, the bumper must extend the full length of the outermost wheeltrack (Outside of tire to outside of tire)
For tires sticking out, I had one officer ticket me for a "projecting load on the vehicle" obviously tires are not a load on the vehicle, but rather the vehicle a load on the tires.
I have yet to find a law that clearly dictates "no tires outside the body", and I've looked through my law manual pretty good numerous times.

Well the officer that pulled me over couldnt find the law in his little book he had in his squad car so I bet that law does not exsist and if it does, they dont enforce it. Also my aunt is a chicago detective and she said that there isnt really a law out there stating such.

I love the laws on JeepForum. I used it to determine if I had to shell out money for side mirrors when taking the doors off. So for just reference, in Illinois you only need one rear facing mirror that is able to see 200 feet behind the vehicle. This made me happy. Haha
