There has been a little discussion on license plates and what is required. I am no expert on the subject but have some first hand knowledge on it. For many years, going back to when all truck plates had to be safety inspected 3/4 and 1 ton pick up trucks drove around with B-truck plates and nobody cared or minded. About two years ago the police (usually state) increased enforcement of license plate class, and safety inspection laws and the amount of tickets written seemed to increase. This is not based on hard numbers but rather a increase in web activity on camping, off road, and boating web sites. On these sites there was a notable increase in threads about getting tickets in IL for trucks with out of class plates, and no safety inspection, even if they were from out of state. Most of the people had 3/4 or 1 ton trucks or SUV's running B-truck plates. I am not going to venture a guess as to why this increase happened. Some claim economic reasons but who knows for sure. I live out in a rural area and see a lot of trucks most of which still run B-truck plates. But after talking to some people at bars, restaurants, fuel stations, drivers license facility, etc. (very scientific research I know) there seems to be an increase in people getting D-truck plates. About 4 years ago the state passed a law that states any trailer with a TC or heavier plate must be towed by a vehicle having a current safety inspection sticker as well as the trailer must have a current safety sticker.
I didn't think too much about getting new plates until last summer when a friend called me in need of some help with the law. He was on his way to the Dells when he was pulled over on I90 and had a lot of tickets being issued to him. His family was taken to the Belvidere oasis to await someone to pick them up while my friend was taken to jail and his vehicle was impounded. Very long story short most tickets were dismissed, but the out of class and no safety inspection tickets were upheld.
After doing a lot of looking on state websites and talking with Secretary of State officers it was clear as mud. There is a lot of conflicting terminology on the rule books and state brochures. But the term that seems to stick the best is "weight class". Some literature states vehicle weight but most say weight class as far as determining what plates you need. Since Mfg. do not have well defined weight classes for light duty vehicles the courts have gone to GVWR as defining what the Mfg. intended the max vehicle's weight to be. Another benefit is the police do not have to weigh every vehicle at scales for weight class infractions, it's printed right on your door jamb. The Sec of State was rather clear that they go by the GVWR and the law has been that way for a long time. So this means all 3/4 ton and heavier vehicles are subject to D- truck plates, including all Ford Excursions and 3/4 ton Chevy Suburbans. (they like to look for those I was told) Vanity plates such as Peace, Fire fighter, cancer survivor, etc are considered to fall into the max weight class of 8000#.
So it seemed I needed to upgrade my plates. I didn't like it one bit, the cost is double, I can't park on the streets in some suburbs, certainly I must abide by truck route road limitations (I can't drive on some streets and boulevards), and I must deal with getting safety inspections twice a year.
Here is a link to some license plate info from the state.

Just another reason to live in Wisconsin. The rules are much easier to understand, licensing is cheaper, no tollways, and no plates for trailers under 3000lbs. Here we can legally run smaller plates on a heavier vehicle. You are not breaking the law unless you are hauling more weight then the plate is rated for. I run F plates on the Motorhome which are rated for 20,000lbs and they cost me $74.00 to renew.

I wish it were just that simple to be able to live there. Considering the political volatility in WI, I wouldn't hold my breath that anything will remain the same as usual.
As far as the plate requirements go in WI that is how it used to be enforced here in IL.

Thanks for the info Gregg.
I ended making a series of calls this morning to various state agencies in Springfield between the SOS and DOT.
Looks like I certainly do need to get new plates, thanks to the State for not making me aware of this! I am sorry but this can't be solely the drivers responsibility to know that this law changed. I am all for being compliant but how the hell was I supposed to know that the law changed??
What really sucks is I have Vanity plates that I have had for many years and will be losing them and the crazy booty parking restrictions that I will now be subject to. I REALLY HATE ILLINOIS!
I also have an enclosed trailer with TC plates that I have been towing for 5 years and it has never been inspected. My new trailer would have to have TE plates and fall in the same category. Any trailer plates TC and lower require safety inspections.
I made a few more calls and was told I could use RT plates and then not have to deal with the inspections. The trailer is enclosed and I do plan to camp out of it, hell it has AC, so that fits the SOS requirement for living quarters.
One really nice woman I talked to told me her Supervisor has D plates and he doesn't get it inspected. LOL He did however say that the law states that he should. I have a call into the SOS police in to confirm the requirement.

Just got off the phone with a Special Investigator for the IL State Police, really nice guy. He confirmed I do need 6 month inspections.
I then asked him where the inspection stations are at. He started to look and 10 minutes later he finally found one but was pretty irritated that it was that hard to find.
I told him the women I talked to at the DOT was less than helpful and basically spit out the State police # and hung up.
He is going to call them and yell at someone cause he was pissed off! All I was trying to do was be legal and the state has made it really difficult to do, and this biotch didn't want to help me. As he put it, so many lazy people at the SOS office, they don't want to get off there booty and help someone.
I still hate IL.
I wish I lived in WI or DA U.P.

I guess that I'd rather pay higher insurance rates for living in MI than deal with all this crap for my truck and trailers.

Evans I do not see how FF plates affect this, they are still rated at 8000# max and your ZJ surely has a GVWR less than 8000#, and anybody can get those plates so being a FF doesn't matter. Maybe I misunderstood you.
Weeeee I am glad my info was of some help, and I hope it saves someone a bogus ticket. I just wish it saved us some money and not cost us another $100+/yr. As far as your trailer, there is a section specific to RV's and the requirements. Make sure you meet them before getting RT plates.

In Michigan one time trailer plates…… awesome. But again you have to live in MI, and to do that you need a job up here…… Good luck with that.

Ggg, I just wanted to note that I have FF plates, thats all. My other ZJ, the niner has B-Truck plates on it since those plates were first on my Dodge Ram, then my 98 XJ and now they are on the niner. I am waiting til Nov. to replace them with FF plates as well. Just trying to be part of the discussion

Doug it is $21 out here. Come out get an inspection and we can meet for a cold one afterward. Nothing like turning a state mandated pita into a social event. lol

State mandated pita is right! Took three count em THREE state agencies to figure it out, and they expect us the driver to be responsible.
I am still furious!

can't you save some cash money on your zJ & niner and run passenger plates? that is if your bumpers arn't too high. I think they need to be under 28".

I would rather run firefighter plates since some of the money goes to the fallen firefighter foundation. Yes it would be cheaper but I like my FF plates
