Man oh man its one of those days.  SO for a while ive had a slight vibration when accelerating from a stop light, i know its probibly a u joint needing some grease or on its way out.  So last night the truck drove fine all the way home.  Woke up this morning and was going to grease my driveshaft.  My grease gun needed new grease so i was changing it out, and the end with the plunger with the spring, shot out and took out my two middle fingers when i was screwing the other end together, they swelled up and i was bleeding all over.  A few round house kicks to the bed of my truck later i decided this was a sign and wrapped it up.  Spent all morning icing my hand, and then headed off to work.  My truck started shaking violently all the way up to 60mph when i was on the gas.  Figures the trucks getting back at me for kicking it lol!!  Keep in mind 13hrs and 0 miles ealier it was driving fine.  So i limp it to work (30mile drive up 55 to midway) and hope under and one of my rear driveshaft u joints is puking its guts out.  So now im going to have to drop my rear driveshaft tonight at about 10pm, drive to new lenox to use my buddies press and swap the shaft back in.  Looks like ill be burning the midnight oil.  Thanks for reading, man its one of those days lol.

Got it all finished at 130am this morning. I was missing all my needle bearings under one of the ujoint caps on my rear driveshaft.  MAke sure you grease your stuff, because it will break at the most incovienent times.  Im just glad it didnt manifest itself at the cliffs and or break there.

I have an even sadder story about a carburetor and a tired engine.

When greasing u-joints make certain all four caps show grease pushing out. I just had two on my truck go out and 3 of the four caps were all greased up, the fourth was all dried up.

slander make sure you grease the new joint, the grease in it when new is only there for packaging not long term use. Don't ask how I know this.

Here is my week(ish) long story ending in one of those days…

Grinding brakes – pulled, discovered no wear indicators, pad (formerly known as) started to chew on my rotor. Sooo replaced pads and rotors plus cleaned, and serviced rears last week(ish)

Noted after reinstall that passenger side front wheel was a bit on the wobbly side – Wheel bearing was going out.  Drove it for a few days.

During the period of driving for a few days, I also discovered the front drive shaft was what has been making yet another mysterious noise. Sooo pulled drive shaft to have it re-built.  Turned out the CV joint was not happy.

Yesterday, dropped drive shaft off and picked it up today on the way home from work.  While coming home, stopped at two parts stores to get a new wheel hub… As luck would have it, they are out of stock so I continued home.  5 miles from home the wheel bearing starts making clicking and creaking sounds.  Good thing I'm almost home and stopping at a Napa that is just 1/2 mile from our house to get the wheel hub.. Get to Napa and the wheel hub they have on the shelf being sold as new was obviously used and a return.. Guy at counter says come back in 2 hours and I'll have another one. Sooo I head home, leave Napa and wheel bearing begins to crack, pop and groan and I get severe wobble in steering wheel.  Creep home, get her in garage, pull off all the crap to change wheel hub and discover my axle u-joint is half locked up….

My plan for today WAS reinstall the rebuilt drive shaft and put new front hub in.. End of the day, it's up on jack stands and ripped apart.  Now I have to drive my YJ that has NO front bumper and a leaking front axle (also discovered a few days ago).  To add insult, the guy who I was supposed to get my rebuilt AX15 from today, never called.  It's basically been one of those WEEKS for me.

Price list:

$100.00 for pads and rotors

$264 for complete rebuild of front drive shaft

$106 for front wheel hub

$100 (guess) for axle drive shaft U-joint.

I'm just HOPING that a bent axle shaft was not the cause of all of these other things.  We shall see tomorrow.

Ggg- All over it and greased up.  Im pretty good about greasing stuff up, the joint that went out the grease zerk is impossible to get to on the truck, in order to reach it you need to pop the shaft off.  I put that off for two years and it came back to bite me.

Stinkymud- wow that sucks!  BUT you can replace that u joint for about 15 bucks.  Just get a new u joint and press it out on a bnch vice, or you can even use a socket to get the u joint out.  DO NOT pay someone to do that, changing a u joint is sometheing evrey wheeler needs to know, because thats what commonly breaks on the front end, and its considerd a wear item.

This site is extemely useful for any jeep project you need to do, this is the site i used to learn how to alot of the mods and mantenence on my previous jeep http://www.stu-offroad.com/index.asp.  He has a real good write up on how to change out u joints amongst many many many others!!!

They aren't always that easy.  I agree it is an easy fix, but it did take me about three days to change mine.  I'm not the quickest worker and I get distracted pretty easily when I see shinny things or moving targets in my yard that I think I can hit with arrows.  The part that took me so long was the welded caps, rust, fusion….  it was the biggest pain in my butt.  Soaked it in penetrating oil and put some heat to it and I finally got it out.  I don't think I'm going to tack weld the caps anymore.

"welded caps, rust, fusion" – You hit it right on the head, Tony.  @ Slander – I've changed many many u-joints and I will NEVER mess with them again.  It's just not worth it to me.  I do 90% of the work on my Jeeps but some things are just better left to the Pros in my opinion.  And I LOVE Stu's site.  Lots of great stuff for reference and tips. =)

No axle needed.  Just the u-joint went south.  However I have no idea if it's an HP or not, never paid attention.  Doubt it though.

I use a ball joint press to push the caps out then hammer and socket to tap in the new ones. After loosing a cap last year I placed 2 small tack welds on them. I know what if they break on the trail? I picked up a set of 30 shafts cheap for spares.
