So I finally broke my Firestik antenna. I thought for sure it was indestructible, but I was wrong. Since I live in Chicago I can't avoid parking in garages. Downfall is the antenna would always smack against ceiling support beams.
I drove through a parking garage this morning and not thinking anything of it, I got home and noticed my antenna was an inch shorter. The antenna snapped off right where the SWR Screw meets the antenna. The rubber cap even snapped off evenly. I knew after a period of time I would do damage, but I think the freezing temps spead up the destruction.
Oh well. Guess it's time to buy another Firestik!

The real reason John broke his firestik is because he used to run ZJ coils as a lift and his Jeep is still angry at him, it was only a matter of time before the Jeep got payback, lol.

I'm going with evans on this one your jeep always has pay back. LOL. I'm pretty sure John had a spring cause he told me to get one and I did. It's this cold weather my spring gets frozen over and doesn't want to work and the antenna gets iced over to so ya I can see them breaking.

I dunno, I live in Chicago and I have not been in a parking garage for years…
Why even have the antenna on when you are just around town?
I've never understood the desire to have all these wild CB antennas and tricked out radios when, if you are in a properly equiped groups, and obeying good trail etiquette you should never have to communicate beyond line of site, there is never really a need to get serious range out of your CB. I've found a mag mount antenna and a decent radio more then enough.

well, for atleast the stooges. we use ours in more than just line of sight when we are around town because we all live with in a reasonable distance, and sometimes drive the same way to work. So haveing the stick on at all times is really handy when you dont want to make a phone call.
but johns is an easy fix. all he has to do is pray to the ZJ coil god and a new one will come in the mail

Man I'm never going to live down the ZJ Coils am I?? LOL Good one Evans :-)
I do have a spring on my antenna and highly recommend it to anyone that has a firestik. As for the leaving the cb antenna on, I never gave it any thought to take it off. I always like that all I had do was turn on my cb and I could use it. I think the antenna would have been fine being smacked around if it wasn't for it being zero below temperatures. Either that or the ZJ Coils gods have it out for me. LOL
My plans are to order another firestik, except this time don't screw it on until the day of a trail ride. Smart huh?
Hey check out the warranty from Firestik's website:
"Damages caused by abuse, misuse, negligence (i.e. hitting overhead objects, improper installation) are considered to be avoidable circumstances and therefore, are not covered by this warranty"
Haha, I'm a perfect example of how to void your warranty.

Why is everyone so down on ZJ coils?
There was a time when if you had an XJ your only lift option was spacers, ZJ coils or early Bronco springs…
Even after the aftermarket opened up for the XJ you still had to run ZJ lift springs int he front to get the seriously tall lift numbers.
Nothing wrong with ZJ springs; they are a great budjet boost and have a acceptable spring rater unlike the EB springs.

John,
Don't feel bad, I did the same thing with a FL4' that was less than a week old. I felt like such a dumba** about 30 seconds into the parking garage at Oakbrook Mall. But at least I didn't have ZJ coils on my KJ. ha, ha. – sorry.
FWIW, not sure where you shop online, but I've heard many praise http://www.rightchannelradios.com/ . Myself I know a guy who owns a CB shop out in Hampshire (I-90 & Rt20) and buy from him. I've also heard to stay away from Walcott CB in Iowa – especially if you ever need to deal with their customer service.
I agree, antenna springs are good, and having a quick disconnect (internal locking) is another good option.

Yeah, ZJ coils are fine. Evans just likes to give John crap about having them cause his lift used to be small. Its just an old club inside joke is all.
Jerry, we should stay away from Wolcott? Crap, thats where I ordered all my stuff. Why is it bad? Just the service?

Tim, Wolcott CB is suppose to have horrible customer service. I've heard more than one person say it took weeks to get credit issued to their credit cards after returning a item. Plus, they charge a outrageous restocking fee. On the other hand, several people have remarked what a great company Right Channel Radio's CB shop is, including their return policies and support staff.
But like I said, I've been buying from the same guy out in Hampshire for several years now. Every time I buy a new dump truck, I have this guy install Ranger CB's and pull the cheap coax cables Peterbilt Trucks installs at the factory with his high-end coax & antenna's. This guy specializes in sales and authorized repairs on high end models but also sells Cobra's for those on a budget. Matter of fact, he is soon coming out with his own line of ultra-mega CB radios.

Good to hear I'm not the only one breaking cb antennas. LOL
Thanks for the info Jerry. I ordered everything, except my radio, from my cb from Walcott CB in Iowa. They are priced a bit higher than a few other sites online, however at the time they were able to ship to me within 72 hours. Can't say much about their customer service or returns. Never had to deal wth them on this.
I'm going to check out the two places you recommended. I might look into the quick disconnect for the antenna, but i'm not sure how that will effect the receptiion after the antenna is tuned and I disconnect it.
P.S. Man everyone is jumping on bashing the ZJ Coils. LOL
