I have a Matkins Level II frame that has two tabs on the front bumper that appear to be for d-rings…but the hole looks to be only about 1/2 inch in diameter…which will not accomodate the rings that I see on most vehicles (i.e. 5/8 or 3/4).

Does this seem right?  Does anyone have experience with this set-up?  There is plenty of material for me to drill it out..but I hate to do any drilling on a recovery point in fear of weakening the existing tab.  Why would Matkins leave only a 1/2" hole?

Thanks

Hard to judge not seeing the weldment but if there is enough material drill it out.

I had heard that Matkins went belly up a few years back, is it a new frame or an older one?

Not sure if the pic will show… The frame had to be bought within the last 5 years.

Its a 1/2" hole and I can't find one that small.  Quadratec has 5/8 and 3/4 but nobody has 1/2 and I don't think the poundages on the smaller ones (if they had em') would be strong enough for safe recovery. I'm guessing 1/2 even with top grade steel is not over 1500lbs.  Just a guess tho.

1/2" is way to small for recovery work.  According to Crosby a 1/2" shackle is rated for only a 4,000 pound working load which is well under what I would feel comfortable with.  Heck., I feel a little nervoud seeing that a 5/8" is rated for only 6,500 pounds…

That picture is really hard to tell but it looks like there is more then enough room to hog them out to 5/8."  How thick are the tabs, in that picture they look really small…
