OK – so as to not hijack the "what did you do for your Jeep today" thread – I have an update about my Deer Hunting trip:

If you didn't already know, I hit two deer on my drive home from the M & G in Mt Prospect on Saturday.  I'm now nicknaming my Wrangler "The Hunter".

So basically the damage is as follows (wish I took photos because you wouldn't believe how little damage there really is):

Driver Side:

  • Busted Fog Light
  • Scratch on Hood from Front corner to basically the windshield
  • Scratched paint on front fender
  • Scratches on the Door
  • Scratches under the Door
  • Dent in front of rear wheel well
  • Broken rear fender flare (sahara style)
  • Light scratches on Grey Hardtop
  • Scratched up Mirror (just the plastic housing)

Passenger Side:

  • Busted Fog Light
  • Grill and Chrome Overlay Dented
  • Headlight Bezel Dented
  • Dented Fender
  • Busted Front Fender Flare (sahara style)

Solution:

  • Paint scratched areas
  • fix the dented fender
  • fix the dent behind driver door
  • install new fog lights
  • install new grill – (not grill overlay at a $189 savings to me from my deductable – per my request)
  • install new (aftermarket) mirrors – but I get to keep the old ones for relocation when my doors are off (free upgrade Laugh)
  • install new BLACK hardtop – grey is discontinued and I wanted Black anyways – I asked if it could be black, the body shop said that was prefered since he would have to order a black one and then paint it grey for me
  • Total out of pocket expense: $311
  • Total cost to the insurance company: $7,238

Now, I wonder if I can talk the body shop into giving me my old Grey Hardtop back.  If so, then I could sell it for some upgrade cash (like new tires) – Just not sure how I would transport the hardtop. I'll have to try to work something out with the body shop and see about transportation to my car garage Laugh

From talking with the body shop – I should be getting the Jeep back approximately the 25th of April – but could take as long as 2nd of May.

No – It could be painted – but there would still be scratches.  Fixing the scratches they have no way of doing.

So, they would have to order a new black hardtop and paint the new one gray to match the old one.  Now I just need to figure if I can get still keep the old hard top and maybe sell it Laugh to another LJ owner that might want a Hardtop for winter.  It's in great shape except for the light scratches from the deer.

It's not like those paint scratches are going to cause any rust

OK – So I talked with the body shop and I finally got a copy of my estimate.

They said that I could keep my gray hardtop if I want it.  Problem is that they are required to re-use the glass from that top for the new one.  Apparently they are ordering a top without glass.  That's a bummer cause for the price that they are ordering the top for, they could get one from Quadratec for the same price (plus shipping) and it comes with glass.  I wish he would just let me order it (and give me the money for the top) and I would pay for shipping and keep the gray one to sell for 800 bucks or so.  I would make 500 out of the deal and would go towards some upgrades.  Oh well, at least I'm getting the black top I've been wanting.

Anyone need a Grey LJ hardtop without glass?

One step closer to blacking out my jeep.  Now to order the black headlight bezels and then I need to remove my nerf bars, sand them, and use bedliner on them.

OK – I talked to the Auto Body Repair Shop yesterday.  They said that they are waiting on a new rim (apparently when the wheel weight shifted it scratched the rim pretty good – so they are replacing it). After they get the new rim (hopefully today or tomorrow) they can mount the tire, balance it and give my jeep an alignment.

They said they are still waiting on the hardtop.  They told me at first that it is backordered. Which says to me that it might be shipping tomorrow, or maybe not until Christmas Surprised

I asked them to cancel that order, they said they couldn't do that because it was a special order and the top has to be custom made.  I told them that was crap because they just said it was backordered. I told them to call and cancel it because Quadratec has 3 black hardtops in stock ready to ship right now for my unlimited.  We went back and forth a little bit, and I'm going to go there today and speak with the manager in person (I'll leave work early).

Basically all I want is a black hardtop.  I'm going to get them to cancel it, cut me the check for 3k (2600 for top + tax + labor) and then I will pay them to paint my current one Black and keep the one I have Cool

So if the wheel is done today I can pick it up – and hopefully we can work out a deal so I can get the hard top painted. If that is the case, I'll be without a top for a few more days while they paint it up. I guess I will have to break out the Bikini top and freeze my butt off in this weather.

Yes, you are missing a joke from last year.  Jerry had a mishap at the Cliff's last year and dented his front grill.  He has been searching for a replacement for some time.  If yours isn't damaged much he probably wants it but I am sure he will chime in. Smile

I'll see if I can keep it if they still have it and let jerry take a gander at it. I don't think it's very useable – or they would have just fixed it

OK – Picked up the Jeep late Saturday afternoon. They are going to check and see if the Grille is still there or not (Grille came off my jeep on Thursday, April 14th, so they aren't sure it was saved from the scrap pile). They said that if it is still available they will let me know and I can have it (but I have a feeling it is already gone).

There are still a few issues with it, and I didn't get the Hardtop.  I'm waiting on the insurance company now. They are getting a refund from the auto body shop for the Hardtop and Chrome Grille Overlay that I didn't want, the taxes, and labor associated with that work.  I should be getting that money back sometime this week or so from the insurance company.

After the cash comes in, I'm basically putting it back into the jeep via upgrades depending upon the amount coming back to me (between 2500 and 2700 – because I paid a 500 deductable). I may pay a paint shop to paint my hardtop black if it's not to expensive.

I'm looking to get new off-road tires, maybe BFG KM2, GY MT/R Kevlar, or Cooper STT tires. I already picked up the black rims from Ggg. I'm going to get a local place to sandblast them and prime them so I can paint them.

Then I'll order a 1.25" BL, 1" MML, Rear Reciever Hitch, JKS Swaybar Discos, Duster Deck Cover, Wrap-Around Windjammer, Oil Pan skid, and Steering Box Skid.

I might replace my 1.75" BB with a 2.5" coil spring lift. If I do, I will also get adjustable Front Trackbar and install my Rear Trackbar.

After all of that I think I will be out of money.  I basically told "the bank" that the money we are getting for the deer is going right back into the jeep as "free" upgrades, and she said "OK" cause she didn't really have a choice in the matter.
