I bet a dollar that he went to a long arms.
Control arm mount drop brackets often end up being a temporary mod. Not a bad one mind you, just a temporary one.
The drops are usually put on by people with a taller lift but no long arms. They smooth out the ride by decreasing the angle of the control arms which is a good thing if you like a nice drive on the road. However they do not increase the articulation because they are not making the arm any longer.
They also lower the mount which counter acts the whole lift the Jeep thing, although they are close enough to the tire it is not as bad as it could be.
If you have a tall Jeep and dislike the harsh ride but can not afford or are not yet ready for long arms they are a good mod.

a lot of them tie in to the cross member to prevent that but you are correct.

Sorry to lose ya a dollar. But, I originally got them to make the ride a little smoother on my 98 with a 4.5" RE lift. Albeit the ride quality was increased, I was only running a sagged 4.5" lift on 31" tires. I decided to take them off due to the decreased ground clearance and the feeling that I didn't really need them. Even with the decreased ground clearance I never banged them off road.
If you have a lift over 4.5" these are a great ride fix until you go for long arms. One tip when installing them, you definitely need to keep the caster adjustment shoe located inside of your control arm bracket. This will keep the control arm from moving back and forth.

Crap.
PM me an address and I will send you a dollar; I was sure that would be it.
I've never seen the drops get caught on stuff off road, a friend ran them when RE first came out with them and they made such a improvement in ride quality it was amazing.

Nick
Any pictures of them installed on your XJ or uninstalled, it would help people see what they are and if they would like to invest in something like that, pictures always help.
