Damn Drew I wish I knew what was going on – I had an extra unit bearing assembly with me. Maybe we should all follow Dean's advice and at least let everyone know what spare parts we are all packing.

Just realized our unit-bearing assemblies are different. THe TJ has a 5 on 4.5 lug pattern and the JK has a 5 on 5 lug…

The axles are 10 Factory… Drew supplied the axles and we set up gears and put his Metal cloak fenders on right before he went to Maob…

Wow broke the Cromo. I've had pretty good luck with them in my 44's. Unit bearing is another story. At least it finally broke on the trail and not on the way home doing 70mph. It could always be worse. Glad to hear you got out okay.

My guess is 44 since he has a Rubicon. That has to be a defective shaft!

Oh yeah…. Good call. As far as being defective….maybe. From the look of that picture the entire jeep is resting on the frame. If the tires were grabbing in interminent intervals, the torsional load from the rapid load, and unload of torque can cause fatuigue and eventually failure of the axle shaft. Wow, I can't believe that came out of my mouth… hands.. whatever.
Cromos are strong and do hold better then normal axels. However, have you ever seen an axle in a destructive test? The axle can actually rotate almost a full turn before it fails. However, if you have a rapid load and unload, it fails in a fraction of that. Think of how a impact wrench works.
Either way, it broke and that sucks.

They call it a 44 but really it's only a D44 in the center. It has the larger ring & pinion and 30 spline inner axle shafts, but it's D30 from there out. Outer axle shafts, hubs, ball joints are the same as other D30 axles.
Still, a chromoly shaft shouldn't be the first part to go! I got a good look at the inside of the hub and it really did look like JB weld or silver epoxy for the inside portion of that outer shaft!

I took the outer Stub that was still left in the Unit bearing out,, and I think what you were looking at or what appeared to be the JB weld or silicone look… was all the Anti-seize. I use it alot.. I hate taking rusted or stuck parts apart.

Your right on. The Jeep was hung up on the passenger side body mount, It spun left on the mount. Spinning jeep tire wedged between two rubber tractor tires and pop. At first I thought it was the locker because the light started flashing and it would not engage.
This pic is after it broke and before the tire fell off. I'm glad I abused it a little on the trail after that instead of just heading to the lot and then on the road.

That would explain it, glad I wasn't seeing things.
