Hey guys – as I mentioned in my introduction, I have an H1 with a Vortec 454. It's having some engine troubles that I can't diagnose and I'm wondering if anyone on DDO knows any good mechanics in the northern burbs who has experience working on Vortec 454's. They are significantly different from Chevy BB 454's so muscle car shops typically stay away because of the electronic systems.
Any recommendations?

p1345 – Camshaft to Crankshaft Position Correlation Fault
With the Vortecs I need an engine scan tool to read the CAMRET (cam retard) sensor to get it to within +/- 2 so that the computer takes over control of the timing. I'm about 15 minutes away from dropping $500 on an AutoEnginuity with the GM OE package or an HPTuner so that I can fix this thing without taking it to a dealer.
Worst. Timing. Setup. Ever.

Do you have the original Vortec engine info from the donor vehicle? The scanners are going to need VIN# etc to know what specs to look for. Your H1 VIN will be no use.

@Ggg – I think AE will pull the VIN right off the PCM which is original from the donor vehicle. I have no idea what make/model vehicle this Vortec came from nor the donor VIN. However, I do know it came from a 96-00 since that's the only years they used the 7.4 before switching to the much better 8.1L.
@tyrone_stooge – I wish it was a simple fix … if it was mechanically timed it'd be a simple fix, but not having a CAMRET sensor reader, IMO it's far from simple right now. Hopefully after I get the AE it'll be simple.
