I'm thinking about going with a Detroit Truetrac in the 8.25 rear on the XJ. While I know I won't get 100% lockup, I feel that it would be much smoother than an auto on the street and much cheaper than a selectable. What do you all think?

I have read many good things about the True-Trac, it sounds like a good compromise instead of a selectable locker.

IMO the Detroit True Trac is an excellent LSD for street use, because it works and has good street manners. Off road it has one issue, it will not work if one wheel is in the air. You need to work your brakes to "trick" it into thinking there is rolling resistance for it to activate. If you do want a locker, one to look into would be a Detroit soft locker. It is a locker, but not as harsh as a regular Detroit, but it still has some of the typical locker street manners.
