Little dusty in this part of the forum.  No one has posted in here for a long time!!

Anyhow, my 89 YJ needs to have the AX-15 rebuilt.  Syncros are SHOT..  I can pull and and then reinstall it but don't have the time to rebuild it myself.  I need a referral to someone who can do it or a shop in the area.

Thoughts would be appreciated!

I don't know who can rebuild it – but I don't mind helping taking it out and putting it back in when you find a place.

In all honesty if the trannys shot, i would not even waste my time rebuilding it unless you know what you doing and want a project to do.  You can find a used tranny, or even a parts jeep with a tranny in iy for cheaper than what a shop will charge you to rebuild it.  Plus i think the 89 has the crappy internal slave cylender for the clutch, go find a tranny out of a newer yj with the external slave cylender.

If he does indeed have the internal slave, IIRC the input pilot is the small version. He will need to change the pilot bushing too when he changes transmissions to the external slave model.

It is an internal. Already looked at the conversion and that I can also do on my own.  =)

Well I got some good news.  It appears I don't need a rebuild after all.  I started to remove the trans yesterday only to discover it was full to the TOP with gear oil.  I removed the shifter and found this out.  So I popped the fill plug and out came over 3 quarts of extra fluid.  I can't believe the idiot PO did this.  Anyhow, I buttoned it back up after getting the fluid to about where it needs to be and it shifts about 80% better.  A complete fluid change should bring her back in service again. Yay me!!

The End. Wink

Fantastic news! Even better was that it was full with oil and not water. The AX-15 requires some special fluids and the owners manual has a misprint in the fluid specs. I am running Red Line MTL (70w80) and it shifts very good in cold weather. The other fluid option I know of is Red Line MT-90 (75w90). You want a GL-3/4, the GL-5 rated oils will eventually harm the synchros. I will say Red Line is not found in your usual parts stores. I get mine at a Speed shop near me, also Summit carries it.

There have been several TSB's issued over the years so this is oil issue is something even the manufacturer has had to address.

TSB #'s;JE-05B-89, JE-50A-89, JE-27B-90, and 21-03-93.

I was actually going to ask what you used.  Heard good stuff about Redline but like you said, it's not easy to find.  I'm thinking that I'm going to gets some good old dino based oil, run it for a week or two, then change again over to the Redline products.  What came out of my trans looks ok but just to be safe I'm gonna let it get "cleaned out" 1st.  If the guy was dumb enough to fill it to the top, then who knows what else he put in it. Confused

I'm hopeful but still have a few other odds and ends to tie up before I commit to trail runs with her.

If for some reason you can't get it locally I can always pick some up from my supplier and bring it to a M&G or other event.
