Sadly there is no standard for trailer plugs; people just tend to wire them how the hell ever they like.

Anytime I tow a new trailer to me I check the lights and all brake functions.  A test light and two jumper wires should be all you need to figure out which colors are out of place.  The test light will tell you the functions on the tow vehicle and then using the jumper wires (one will be the ground) you can tell each function on the trailer.

Most new plugs come with a diagram of the 'standard' function pattern and I always try to wire/correct to that regardless of what the P/O or owner has done.
