Well I finally pulled the plug.  Last weekend I decided to start tearing down the CJ.  Motor is smoking, gas tank has a bunch of floaties in it which keep clogging my fuel line, frame is rusted, steering box leaks…  ect ect.

So after one final ride at Rocks and Valleys trying to break stuff, I started to take all the bolts out of the rusted beast.  I'm doing a hillbilly frame off restoration.  In which I'm going to structurally fix all the problems with the jeep, but keep the body as is. (maybe some more paint)

Some of the main upgrades and fixes will be:

  • Stroked AMC 360 motor
  • Transmission and transfer case clean up
  • repair the frame and add some braces for the motor mounts and rear axle
  • Rebuild the steering box, and modify the pump for some more power
  • Clean up front and rear axles. Possibly get rid of the spool in the rear and put a Yukon grizzy in there.
  • Maybe a brake job

I'm sure I'll find more stuff along the way, but this is the current list.  I'll post pictures along the way and maybe put up a poll to see what color to paint it.

I did a frame up twice on the 1977 CJ5 that I had.  Those were the fun days - long before brain boxes and emission stuff….  That was one Jeep I'm still kicking myself for selling.  Can't wait for the pictures Tony.

Sounds like fun Tony, I think you should go with vinyl siding this time, it hols up better than paint Wink

Had a little ambition with the nice weather, and decided to put an end to this axle wrap stuff.

After a few weeks I finally got the axles back together.  Tomorrow I'll sling them back under the fame and start the long assembly process.
